International Data Privacy and Protection Day

International Data Privacy and Protection Day (IDPPD) is celebrated on 28 January each year. MEGA supports the objective of raising awareness about the importance of protecting the privacy of personal information online and has chosen to shift its usual ‘birthday’ announcements from 20 January to IDPPD 28 January.

MEGA’s user-controlled end-to-end encryption provides the highest level of privacy for your personal files. Nobody can understand the contents of your encrypted files unless you choose to disclose the encryption key. This allows users to share sensitive information to chosen friends, family, business associates etc. without it being visible to service providers or any other party who might intercept Internet transmissions.

Birthday celebrations

MEGA started operations on 20 January 2013, so it has now reached its 4^th birthday! Thank you to our 65 million registered users, and many more casual users, for providing useful feedback and helping us build our product portfolio:

• Sync client with advanced download capability for Windows, macOS and Linux;
• Brower extensions to provide advanced capability for Chrome and Firefox;
• MEGAbird extension for Thunderbird email client.

MEGAsync 3.0

We are pleased to announce the release of MEGAsync 3 for Windows and macOS with significant new features and improvements, including a transfer manager, accurate control of the transfer speed, selectable number of connections per transfer, improvements to increase the transfer speed and an important reduction of the CPU usage during the synchronization of large folders. 

MEGAsync allows you to synchronise any folder(s) on your PC with any folder(s) in the MEGA cloud, providing reliable and secure backup and remote/distributed access to your files. MEGAsync 3.0 is available as a fresh install from https://mega.nz/#sync right now. Existing installations will update automatically in the coming days if you have checked MEGAsync/Settings/Account/Update. The version for Linux will also be released by then.

Encrypted Chat

Our well-known cloud storage is complemented by encrypted chat, allowing you to have secure user-controlled encryption of text, voice and video communication with your MEGA contacts. You can hold encrypted text, voice and video chat sessions with a single contact or text chats with a group of contacts through your browser.

Now we are introducing MEGAchat for mobile. MEGA’s Android and iOS apps provide seamless integration with the browser chat so you can move from one to the other and see the full history of each chat. These new apps are being released as alpha trials to invited users. To participate in the alpha release, please send your email address to

When we are satisfied with the new functionality's performance, we will make it available through the app stores for all our regular users.

MEGAchat's cryptographic security model

Messages are only transferred to and stored on MEGA's servers after they have been encrypted by you using user-controlled encryption. New encryption keys are created and exchanged whenever a member joins or leaves the group chat, keeping the prior conversation confidential to the members at that time. Just like our end-to-end encrypted cloud storage, MEGA does not have access to the encryption keys and can't decrypt any of your messages.

To get started with MEGAchat, invite your contacts to open a MEGA account, then use the 'Contacts' icon on the left menu to start chatting with them. Your previous chats can be found on the Conversations tab, so you can review and continue older conversations.

We recommend that you use the contact verification feature to achieve the highest level of confidence that your contact is indeed the person you intended. Select a contact in the left pane on the Contacts tab, then click the Verify button (showing in the right pane) and confirm their Authenticity Credentials through a secure channel or by direct communication before clicking the Approve button to complete the verification.

MEGAcmd

To celebrate IDPPD, MEGA is proud to announce the release of a new product: MEGAcmd.

MEGAcmd is a powerful command line interface for MEGA, available for Windows, Linux and macOS. It features an interactive mode, but also allows you to script operations - ideal for sysadmins, developers and environments where a graphical user environment is unavailable or automation is desired. Users coming from a UNIX background will find the MEGAcmd shell modern and friendly, featuring autocompletion, verbosity control, history, reverse search and support for regular expressions.

Its non-interactive mode enables the easy automation of all the actions that can be performed on MEGA's cloud storage: Uploading/downloading files, sharing and contact management, exporting data and much more – while MEGAcmd takes care of the details (cryptography, connection management, caching, etc.) behind the scenes. MEGAcmd is a versatile tool in the hands of the savvy user for backups of files and folders, sharing contents with a list of contacts, easy uploading/exporting of files that match a pattern (e.g. share all videos on a particular event with relatives) etc.

In line with MEGA's policies, the source code for MEGAcmd is publicly available and is included in its SDK.

Universal Windows Platform

A new application for Universal Windows Platform is also available for testing. With our new app you can manage your MEGA account from desktop and mobile devices running Windows 10. If you want to be one of our alpha testers, please send your email address to uwp.alpha@mega.nz

Public Source Code

MEGA supports the safety and security of individuals, companies and governments by providing tools, technologies and services relying on the inherent integrity and security of correctly implemented user-controlled end-to-end encryption. To provide full assurance of that integrity and correctness, we are disclosing the source code of all relevant components. We welcome reviews by independent security researchers to confirm that there are no backdoors in the MEGA systems and that the cryptographic processes are appropriate and reliable. We also invite security researchers to verify that the binaries that can be downloaded from our website and from app stores are built from our published source code with no alterations.

SDK code has been posted on GitHub since 2014, web client code, Firefox and Chrome extension code and MEGAsync code since 2016. Now we have published the code for Android, iOS and Windows Phone apps. Please send comments to crypto@mega.nz

Breach of MEGA’s Terms of Service

Recently we closed the accounts of certain users because files imported into their accounts had been shared publicly by some users and have been identified as illegal and highly objectionable. Any public sharing of Child Sexual Abuse files should be reported to abuse@mega.co.nz so we can immediately close that user’s complete account.
